Kresge Extends Its Detroit-area Arts Support Program To 2008 and Calls for Applications

Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in Michigan’s Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties once again have an opportunity to submit applications for grants that support general operations, following The Kresge Foundation’s decision to extend its Arts Support Program to 2008. The deadline for submitting completed applications is July 14 at 4 p.m.
The grantmaking goal of this program is to build broad-based support for individual artists, arts and culture organizations, and arts infrastructure groups so that they may achieve long-term operational sustainability. This year’s extension will provide up to two years of funding. Last year, three-year grants totaling $6 million were awarded to more than 50 large, medium and small organizations.
To be eligible for the program, an organization’s main mission must be connected to arts, culture and creativity. They also must be located in and serve the city of Detroit and/or Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties and have presented programs to the public for at least two years.
In addition, applicants should have at least one full-time management or administrative staff person, or the equivalent, and have IRS 501(c)(3) designation or operate under a public college, university or government entity.
Grants for 2008-2009 will be based on the size of an organization’s operational budget and cannot exceed 10 percent of its annual operating expenses. The money may be used by recipients for general operating expenses, such as salaries, wages, artists’ fees, artist residencies and consultants’ fees as well as supplies, overhead, production costs and program development.
Other programmatic, administrative, promotional and planning activities also are considered to be grant-eligible expenses.
Grantmaking decisions will be made by Kresge within a competitive review process based on an organization’s quality of artistic achievement, strength of programming and contribution to cultural growth of the region.
