Health Program’s Safety-net Enhancement Initiative Announced Today
Troy, Michigan, September 1, 2009
The Kresge Foundation is requesting proposals for its Safety-net Enhancement Initiative, a new grantmaking opportunity that seeks to foster new models of health-care delivery among local and regional providers in order to reduce health disparities and improve the health outcomes of adults and children living in underserved communities.
The Safety-net Enhancement Initiative comprises two parts: a nine-month program planning and design phase; and a three-year demonstration phase. During the first phase, planning grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded to a maximum of 15 applicants. Responses to the foundation’s request for proposals are due on November 16, 2009.
In the second phase, seven to 10 of the phase-one grant recipients will be selected competitively to receive three-year grants of up to $750,000 each to fund their proposed demonstration projects. At the conclusion of the three years, the grant-funded models and approaches will be evaluated, and the results will be publicized.

Last month Kresge introduced the Health Clinic Opportunity Fund, which is designed to support and strengthen the capacity of free clinics, public health clinics and those designated federally qualified health center look-alikes in order to help them meet both the immediate and long-term health needs of their constituents. The initial wave of proposals is due September 4, 2009, with awards made in December 2009. A second wave of proposals is due March 1, 2010. See the Caring Communities page for details.
The foundation Health Program also offers two other grantmaking opportunities: Healthy Environments and Emerging and Promising Practices. See the Health Program page for details.
