Andrew R. Gatewood

Program Officer
Human Services

As a program officer for Human Services at The Kresge Foundation, Andrew R. Gatewood invites and reviews grant applications for funding support from human-services organizations, oversees a grant portfolio, and assesses the outcomes of Kresge-funded efforts. Along with his colleagues on the Human Services team, Andrew shapes and refines grantmaking strategies employed in the program.

“I am committed to the aim of reducing economic disparities for low-income individuals and underserved communities, and increasing opportunities for all people to thrive,” he says.

After joining Kresge as a program officer in 2004, Andrew initially divided his time between the Human Services and the Detroit teams before moving full time to Human Services. Previously, he worked for 23 years at United Way Community Services in Detroit, where he held the positions of vice president of information and research services, director of research services, and senior research associate. Andrew’s prior experience also includes program planning and project development for the Social Development Commission, a Milwaukee-based community-action agency.

Currently, he is involved with Data Driven Detroit, a new independent regional data center funded in part by Kresge and the Michigan Benefits Access Initiative, a public/private partnership to improve access to public benefits for low-income individuals and families. He also serves on the advisory committees of the Council of Michigan Foundations’ Transforming Michigan Philanthropy Project and the Michigan Nonprofit Association. Andrew holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
